The Meaning of Ilaalla
“Ilaalla” means “mountain” in the Sidamo language of Ethiopia—a tribute to the highlands where coffee was first discovered. For centuries, these mountains have nurtured the world’s most prized coffee beans, shaping traditions that have spread across continents. Ilaalla represents not just Ethiopia’s deep connection to coffee but the journey of coffee itself—growing, evolving, and uniting people around the world.
Our Journey
Coffee’s story began in Ethiopia, where legend tells of a goat herder named Kaldi who discovered the energizing power of coffee beans. From there, coffee traveled to Yemen, fueling ancient trade routes, then spread across the Ottoman Empire, Europe, and beyond. Today, coffee is a global experience, enjoyed in endless variations in every corner of the world.
At Ilaalla, we honor this journey by bringing together the best coffee from around the world. While our roots are in Ethiopia, our vision is global.
